What is 'TextGrid'?
TextGrid is a joint project between ten partners. It is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) for the period starting June 1,2009 to May 31, 2012. TextGrid focuses on developing a virtual research environment for philologists, linguists, musicologists and art historians. It enables Arts and Humanities researchers and projects to work together in a distributed, secure, flexible and extensible environment sharing tools, data and methods.
Which data are included in the TextGrid?
TextGrid is currently composed of data available at the partner institutions, which is a substantial amount. Other initiatives may provide their data via open interfaces in TextGrid as well. TextGrid is built on open standards (data formats, interfaces, protocols, etc.), enabling the exchange and reusability of data and tools.
What is the TextGrid's technical basis?
TextGrid is built upon both current network technologies including Grid and Web Services, as well as information management technologies and principles. All the project's technical features are being documented and published to foster accessibility and reuse.
Who is involved in TextGrid development?
The project combines a balanced team of technology and domain experts. A closer description of those involved is available in Partners.
Who may access the TextGrid?
The overall goal is the creation of a virtual platform that is open to the entire research community. Further examination will show whether this goal is viable under all conditions, such as in the case of limited-access resources.
How is TextGrid funded?
Textgrid received a research grant from the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) from June 2009 until May 2012. The project aims to convert the virtual research environment into a sustainable operation to implement a community-specific legal form for integration in the D‐Grid business model during the project term.
Why is TextGrid significant?
TextGrid is one of the first projects to apply e-Science methods and grid technologies in a humanities field. This field offers fundamental opportunities to support and enhance research processes for the humanities as a whole. Thus, the field needs to be further extended to other domains, with TextGrid serving as the incubator project.
